Nespresso is working to improve its environmental performance, from the coffee cherry to the cup. A scientific and worldwide recognised process called Life cycle assessment (LCA) is used to identify and measure the biggest areas of environmental impact within the value chain.

LCA measures five key indicators: climate change, water footprint, biodiversity, energy and human health. It is a valuable tool in making decisions about how to best optimise environmental impacts and especially ensure that Nespresso is continuously improving it's carbon footprint.

In addition to the own in-house assessments, LCA studies are conducted by Quantis, a team of world-leading experts in the field of environmental life cycle assessment.

In 2008, Quantis conducted a study to help understand how Nespresso could best optimise its carbon footprint. The LCA benchmarked the carbon footprint of a cup of Nespresso coffee. It showed that biggest impacts for climate change happen in growing the coffee and in using the Nespresso machine.

In 2009, Nespresso made the commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of each cup of Nespresso coffee by 20% by 2013. Nespresso is on track to meet this target, achieving an estimated 16% reduction at end of 2011.

Nespresso is also supporting coffee farmers to adopt sustainable practices, thereby reducing the environmental impact of a cup of Nespresso.

Nespresso has focused on designing more innovative, high-performing and energy efficient machines for Club Members and Business Customers. For example, PIXIE, the latest machine, automatically switches off after nine minutes of inactivity, consuming 40% less energy than a model rated as “A” according to FEA / CECED labelling.
